King George's Medical University
Established in 1905, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is a NAAC A++ accredited institution that stands as one of the most prominent medical universities in the country. The foundation stone of this grand institution was laid in 1906 by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, during his second visit to India for his Coronation Durbar as King Emperor. With His Majesty’s consent, the university was named in his honor. Since its inception, the university has been committed to excellence in medical education, unparalleled medical ethics, ground-breaking biomedical research, and exceptional patient care.

King George’s Medical University UP, Lucknow, built in 1905, has acquired national and global eminence for contributions in academics, research, and patient care. It caters to the needs of states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and neighboring Nepal, offering medical services to more than 20 crore people.
It is the largest residential medical university in India with the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Faculty of Nursing, and Faculty of Paramedical Sciences. King George’s Medical University was ranked eighth by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) among medical colleges in 2025. The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has also shortlisted KGMU among the probable ‘Institutes of Eminence,’ recognizing its potential to achieve global standards in medical education and research.
The university campus is spread over an area of 7 sq. km. with more than 50 buildings. There are 2,105 hostel rooms, 550 faculty positions, 700 resident doctors, and in all 5,000 employees. This prestigious government university has approximately 5,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students (250 MBBS, 100 BDS seats) receiving medical education. The university imparts 181 MD/MS/Diploma courses in 24 specialties and 38 DM/M.Ch. courses in 28 super specialties.
Postgraduate courses are offered in MD (119 seats in 16 departments), MS (34 seats in 4 departments), Diploma (26 seats in 4 departments), Diploma (PMHS, 35 seats), MDS (27 seats in 7 departments), DM (15 seats in 4 departments), M.Ch. (23 seats in 7 departments), M.Phil (4 seats in Clinical Psychology), and Ph.D. (in various departments).
The Gandhi Memorial & Associated Hospitals of KGMU has over 4,000 functional beds with more than 4,000 patients admitted at any given time, and on average 10,000 new patients attending the OPD every day. The competencies and capabilities are utilized to the fullest in order to serve the droves of patients flocking in, incessantly, with greater expectations every day. More than 15 lakh patients visit this tertiary care centre annually, with 100,000 indoor admissions each year.
